AHRM Housing Students Win GE Appliances Design Charrette
A charrette is an intense period of design activity to meet a deadline. On Saturday, December 1, 2007, eleven Virginia Tech students and eight East Carolina students met in Wallace Hall to face a real-world kitchen design challenge: design a kitchen in 3 hours!
GE Appliances sponsored the Design Charrette, and four Virginia Tech students and four East Carolina students were named finalists, each receiving $50 scholarships. These students will have their drawings entered in the National Design Contest, and are eligible to receive one of 10 scholarships of up to $5,000.
The Virginia Tech student finalist winners were AHRM students: Sarah Britt, Nicole Gerike, Cassidy Harris, and Sara Johnson
In the 3-hour competition, each student had to produce an original kitchen design for a couple owning a contemporary ranch style home. A list of specific requirements was given to the students to be met in the design, such as including a television, two sinks, a beverage area, and, of course, GE appliances. Students were required to produce a hand-drafted floor plan, an elevation or perspective, and a design concept statement.
Contest judges were faculty JoAnn Emmel and Julia Beamish of the AHRM Department and designers Judy Shorter of Radford, VA and Ruth Ann Taylor of Raleigh, NC. Contest proctors were Kathleen Parrott, AHRM faculty and Yaprak Savut, East Carolina faculty.
Congratulations to our student winners!
